DeKalb Denies Judicial Center Bond, Wheel Tax

DeKalb County voters failed to pass two referendums on the ballot, one for a $65,000,000 bond deal to fund a judicial center and the other to institute a $50 wheel tax.

85 percent of voters were opposed to the general obligation bonds. The wheel tax had 83.7 percent of voters against it. A total of 9,400 citizens voted in this election.

The bonds were made into a referendum after local citizens held a petition drive opposing the construction of the facility. Some citizens said they were concerned about the financial impact of such a project.

County officials had proposed the wheel tax as a way to offset a recent fifty-one cent property tax increase.

83.3 percent of early voters opposed the wheel tax referendum and 85.2 percent opposed the bond deal out of 6,425 early voters.
