Levi Detwiler Outpaces Field In Cross Country Victory

Levi Detwiler knows one victory can do more than add another medal to the collection. The Cookeville runner is using his latest breakthrough to build confidence for the postseason while chasing a bigger goal of helping the Cavaliers leave their mark on Cookeville cross-country history.

Detwiler outpaced a field of 154 participants to secure a first-place finish at the Coleman Midgett Invitational. With regionals and the state meet approaching, the result gave Detwiler another indication of where he stands against high-level competition.

“It was a lot of confidence and joy just going into later parts of the season,” Detwiler said. “Just winning mid-season races just really helps out with knowing that I can hang out with some of the bigger guys for regionals and state coming up.”

The Cookeville runner put himself in contention from the opening portion of the race, positioning himself among the leaders rather than having to make up ground later.

“I think just getting out hard that first little mile and setting yourself up in that first pack and just gaining confidence helps leading with the later parts in the race,” Detwiler said.

As the postseason approaches, Detwiler’s attention extends beyond his individual performances. He credits Cookeville’s training environment and the Cavaliers’ shared expectations for keeping the group moving toward its postseason goals.

“Just trusting my coach’s training and trusting the training of also my teammates, just working together to achieve a bigger goal of getting that placement at state and just trusting our training,” Detwiler said.

That team environment also helps Detwiler keep individual accomplishments in perspective. The constant demands of distance running mean one successful race does not guarantee the next one will produce the same result.

“I think just running in general just keeps you humble sometimes because not all days are going to be good days,” Detwiler said. “And I think confidence just comes just daily, and just working out, especially with teammates, running workouts with my teammates, just staying on pace keeping each other humble as well.”

For Detwiler, the larger measure of this season will be what the Cavaliers accomplish together. He sees improvement at the front of the pack as something that can elevate the runners behind them and ultimately help define this year’s team.

“I keep pushing myself because the people around me push themselves,” Detwiler said. “It’s fun being part of a team, getting to know your teammates, and once the ones at the front get faster, the ones in the back follow and just gaining a legacy and hopefully getting our names down in Cookeville history for our team this year.”
