White County Humane Society volunteers proposing the creation of a board of directors to oversee the White County Animal Shelter.
Volunteer Ellen Horvath said the board would be composed of animal welfare advocates who work collaboratively to set long-term goals.
“The proposal is designed to transfer the White County Animal Shelter-related issues from the county commissioners to a team of several people who will be approved by the county commissioners,” Horvath said, “Who will align with an approved mission statement and commit to completing various tasks related to a successfully and responsibly run animal shelter.”
Horvath said the group would ensure legal compliance without managing the daily operations of the shelter.
“The board does not make policy but rather ensures that policy is being carried out,” Horvath said. “Board members will actively participate in making informed, careful decisions, putting the shelter’s best interests above personal and professional gain.”
Horvath said the board would ensure that all resources directly benefit animal rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming efforts. Horvath said the group would also maintain transparency regarding donation allocations, standard of care, and shelter statistics.
Horvath said she has been a committed volunteer at the shelter for four years. The county executive said he would meet with Horvath to discuss the proposal further.
Horvath will be placed on the agenda for the next steering committee meeting to present the proposal.
