Tennessee Tech golfer Jacob Rose found early-season success by taking a straightforward approach to the game, trusting his preparation and focusing on fairways, greens and limiting mistakes as he looks to lead the Golden Eagles throughout the season.
Rose is utilizing a simplified approach to the game to lead the Golden Eagles following a successful opening performance this season.
Rose said his strategy on the course focuses on fundamental execution rather than complex maneuvers. Rose said this philosophy centers on hitting fairways and greens consistently to minimize mistakes during a round.
“I would say I’m a pretty boring golfer, ” Rose said. “I try my best to hit as many fairways as I can, hit as many greens as I can, and if the putt goes in, it goes in. If it doesn’t, then we’re just tapping in. I try to keep things simple.”
Rose said the results of the first tournament validated the work he put in during the spring and summer months. Rose said this early success provides a foundation of confidence as he moves through the remainder of the semester.
“It just kind of lets me know that the preparation that I put in over the summer and in over the spring, it really paid off and gives me a little bit more confidence going into the rest of the semester just knowing that I could be in a good position to try and close one out,” Rose said.
Rose said his ability to remain successful on the course depends largely on his mental discipline. Rose said he avoids over-analyzing his swing or his play while he is competing.
“I would say it’s more of a mental thing,” Rose said. “Just knowing that I keep things simple, I try not to lean myself too off with my swing while I’m playing. Just knowing that like I have that confidence, it really helps.”
Rose said the environment at Tennessee Tech has played a significant role in his development as a student-athlete. Rose said the coaching staff and his teammates created a welcoming atmosphere from his first day on campus.
“It’s just really nice to have basically some brothers to go and just play golf with and just make it more fun,” Rose said. “Coach and my teammates, they’ve done a great job just really welcoming me day one since I’ve been here. Coach has really made me feel welcomed and all my teammates just like making me feel like one of them.”
Rose said the team is currently focused on incremental improvement by mastering small details of the game. Rose said the head coach emphasizes doing the little things correctly to reach the team’s full potential.
“I’d say just trying to get better every single day,” Rose said. “Coach has really tried dialing it in, just doing the little things right and I think if me and my teammates, we can do that each and every day, I think the sky’s the limit.”
