White County Executive-Elect Kyle Goff announced Thursday a proposed Bitcoin mining operation on Pleasant Hill has been suspended.
Goff said the project will no longer move forward at the Pleasant Hill location. Goff said J.M. Passons and the Passons family are responsible for stopping the development from entering the community.
“The Bitcoin Mining Operation on Pleasant Hill has been suspended and removed,” Goff said. “This is unequivocally because of JM Passons and the Passons Family. Thank you to Mr. Passons for not letting this come into our community.”
Goff said there are no further details available regarding the specific circumstances or the actions taken by the Passons family. Goff said he would not identify the entity that proposed the operation or how far the project had progressed before it was halted.
“There will be much more to come on this subject,” Goff said. “I am working hard to research what tools and resources that we have available to prevent this from happening again.”
Goff said he is currently investigating what authority and resources the county government can utilize to block similar cryptocurrency mining developments in the future. Goff said more information regarding the county’s regulatory approach will be released as his research continues.
Goff said the county has not yet identified specific measures such as zoning changes or permitting requirements to address future cryptocurrency mining.
