Gainesboro officials honored Mayor Lloyd Williams for 12 years of service meeting where the board presented him with a commemorative gift and recognized his leadership in securing millions in grant funding.
Mayor Lloyd Williams said the town has successfully obtained nearly $6 million in grants during his three terms in office. Williams said he focused his tenure on supporting community projects like the local park and making necessary improvements to the town’s infrastructure.
“The main thing you do, is I try to concentrate on our infrastructure,” Williams said. “And be supportive to people, that want to, like the Park, that was a, Jordan led the charge for it, but stuff like that, just try to support people.”
Williams said the town faced significant challenges at the start of his administration, including a rough beginning with the first grant the town ever received. Williams said the current municipal staff is a great crew, though he noted that several original employees from the start of his term are still serving the town.
“It’s been a good run,” Williams said. “We’ve done some good stuff and we’ve… Well, who was all was here with me? Make sure Lisa was here at the beginning, Mickey, Jerry, Chad. Got the, the original ones. Everybody else come on board. Got a great crew now.”
Williams said he will miss working with the board and town employees as his time in office concludes. Williams said he believes the town is being left in good hands with the incoming administration.
“I enjoyed being around y’all,” Williams said. “I’m still gonna be around you, but I enjoyed it. Made it a lot easier on me. I mean, honestly, I didn’t have to deal with… There’s problems come up here and there, but everybody done their job and good people, so I really do appreciate it.”
Williams said the success of the town’s grant applications was a collaborative effort involving the Board of Aldermen, the county, and various local committees. Williams said he specifically tried to support citizens who led charges for community improvements.
“But it started off rough and we’ve done some good things, and I tried to figure it up or whatever, but whatever,” Williams said. “It’s like over close to $6 million in grants in 12 years. That’s not me. That’s the alderman. That’s the county helped out on some of them. Uh, the parks committee, the, up there. And I seen them… The main thing you do is I try to concentrate is on our infrastructure and be supportive to people that wanna… Like the park. That was a… We had a… Jordan led the, uh, charge for it. But stuff like that, just try to support people. And I do appreciate all of it.”
The Board of Aldermen and town employees presented Williams with a gift and a card during the meeting to mark his final session as mayor.
