White County officials approved speed limit reductions for three local roads following requests from parks officials.
The Steering Committee A approved the changes after reviewing documentation signed off on by the highway department. The adjustments affect South Fork Road, Jolly Road, and Scotts Gulf Road. Commissioner Dakota White said park rangers had reached out with the request.
“I mean, Virgin Falls is very popular, as well as Welch Point,” White said, “And all the great stuff out there, so they reached out and asked for it, and I completely understand, I’ve been on it and there are people going very fast.”
The committee moved to set the speed limit at 25 mph for South Fork Road and Jolly Road, neither of which previously had an established limit. Scotts Gulf Road, which was previously set at 35 mph, will also be reduced to 25 mph.
Chairman TK Austin said the paperwork for all three roads had been completed by Jerry Sawyer prior to the vote. White said the stretch of Scotts Gulf Road in question extends approximately eight or nine miles toward the river.
The decision comes as the county also addresses infrastructure concerns near the old quarry site on Old Kentucky Road. A representative from Waste Management said the company has been in discussions with the state regarding traffic safety and signage for heavy trucks entering the highway.
