Tennessee Tech is accelerating its timeline for student admissions and financial aid decisions to provide incoming students with award notifications before Christmas.
Outreach Coordinator Joe Clark said the university wants to ensure students are aware of all available financial resources as early as possible to assist with their planning. Clark said providing this information quickly allows students to make more informed decisions about their education and preparation.
“We just want to make the process as easy as possible for the student and, you know, the longer you wait to post awards and to post aid, you know, the more nervous they become because they’re getting stuff from other places and we just want to make sure that, you know, we can get that information to them as soon as possible and so they know exactly what they have,” Clark said.
Clark said the university recognizes that the transition to college is a significant step for high school students that often comes with uncertainty. Clark said the rising cost of education has increased the importance of alleviating student stress by offering early opportunities for scholarships and aid.
“Alternatively, they might, you know, be that type of student who knows exactly where they want to go, so they’re they’re ready to know if they can afford to go and if they’re going to have the opportunity to attend the colleges that they want to attend,” Clark said. “And you know, everything’s getting a little more expensive, so this is one of our ways of alleviating that stress is to, you know, let them know what they have as early as we can and just to give them as many opportunities as possible for, you know, financial aid and scholarships.”
Clark said the university aims to be among the first institutions to notify students of their status. Clark said this proactive approach is intended to demonstrate that the campus community and faculty are dedicated to supporting students from the beginning of their academic journey.
“I think it’s, you know, Tennessee Tech, like I said, we’re all about making students aware of what’s available to them,” Clark said. “And for us, it’s just about, hey, we want you to consider us because look, we’ve got a great campus, we have, you know, amazing professors, we have amazing, you know, members of our campus who are willing to work for the student.”
Clark said the university is not just competing with other schools, but is working to keep Tennessee Tech at the forefront of students’ minds. Clark said the earlier feedback also serves an internal purpose by allowing the university to adapt to the needs of future classes.
“It allows us to prepare for future semesters, future school years, you know, so we’re always able to adapt to what incoming students need and it allows us to adapt to, you know, changes in how people feel about the process,” Clark said. “So it gives us it gives us a chance, like I said, to just keep, you know, iterating and improving and and getting better and better at what we do.”
Internal changes to support the faster timeline include moving up deadline dates for transfer students. Clark said the university also opened its general application as early as possible on August 3.
“So it’s always it really always comes back down to how much of an easier experience can we make this for the student, you know, anything from like updating the application portal for students who have applied to how we reach out to students, you know, which is a process that we’ve been simplifying,” Clark said. “So just all these little things that really add up to create a smooth experience for the student who’s applying.”
Clark said the university continues to evaluate its outreach and application portal to simplify the experience for applicants. Clark said the university remains non-committal, meaning students can apply at any time without a binding obligation.
“If you’re thinking about going someplace else but now you’re considering Tech and you and you want to come to Tech, we can we will do our best to get you in as quickly as possible and as smoothly as possible,” Clark said.
Clark said students interested in the upcoming fall semester can still apply through the university website.
