A slow-moving thunderstorm producing heavy rain and abundant lighting Friday night, prompting Flash Flood Warnings for Putnam County.
The National Weather Service upgraded the warning to considerable threat around 8:15pm as rainfall continued. The rainfall rate, according to forecasters, has decreased significantly so new flooding is unlikely. But, flooding already happening in parts of Algood and Cookeville.
Street flooding reported along North Washington Avenue, East 20th Street, Brookefield Drive, Middlebrooke Road.
Intense rainfall amounts of as much five inches per hour were reported by radar in the Upper Cumberland. The movement of the storms was very slow.
“There is some sort of north-south oriented boundary that is providing the focusing for all these storms, so that’s why they are lined up the way they are,” Forecasters said. “When you couple those high rainfall rates with the slow movement of these cells, it’s the perfect recipe for flash flooding.”
