Some businesses in downtown Livingston can now utilize its sidewalks for signage as long as ADA guidelines are followed.
Mayor Curtis Hayes said sidewalk on the east side of the square is the only one large enough for signs. The sign must be within five feet of the business and no larger then two feet.
“We have had some merchants around our downtown area wanting to put out sandwich boards sign like they do in most communities,” Hayes said. “Unfortunately, in some parts of our downtown area, the sidewalks just are not wide enough.”
Hayes said the city has received ADA compliance complaints in the past. ADA requires at least 60 inches of sidewalk for passing wheelchairs.
“At least this does help at least one side of the square,” Hayes said. “In the event we were to do an overhaul or something, then it would open up the other sides too.”
The Livingston Board of Alderman passed the sign ordinance on Tuesday.
