Cookeville’s Senior Citizen Call Check Request program is off to a slow start with only seven people signing up two weeks after its launch.
But Cookeville Police Captain Bobby Anderson said the seniors taking advantage of the service appreciate the check-ins.
“They do, and we appreciate the fact we have a daily contact with them,” Anderson said. “It creates some dialogue and some face-to-face contact with them, as well, as we do it.”
The program started April 2 in response to concerns of some seniors becoming isolated and in need of help during COVID-19 related restrictions.
Anderson said he hopes more seniors will take advantage of it. For someone over 65 signed up for the service, the Cookeville Police Department conducts daily calls between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Everyone who registers must select an alternative emergency contact. Failure to reach either contact may cause a wellness check by the police department.
