Delays Continue For Hilham School Walking Trail

Hilham students and residents will have to wait a little longer for the school’s walking trail.

Overton County Executive Ben Danner said it’s been a slow, difficult process.

“Well last year course the Improve Act the state passed, everybody that’s paving is covered up doing regular road jobs,” Danner said. “We’ve had a hard time getting estimates together, and this rain, this winter, has hurt us. We’re hoping as soon as asphalt plants open up toward the first of March that we get on it.”

Danner said the project should still be done before the $20,000 Healthy Built Environment Grant runs out.

“The highway is going to do part of it and I don’t know if we’ll have to beat it out or not, depending on what the bids come in. Course, it’s all a little more than what we had grant for but the county is going to match the other part of it,” Danner said.

Having a walking trail will make it safer for pedestrians to walk in that area where there is no shoulder on the road, Danner added. He’s hopeful the project will finish by June.
