Visitors to the White County Fair will notice a change this year.
Fair Board President Mike Wilson said the nine-day event will take place a week earlier this year.
“With the leap year, our carnival cannot be at our fair the traditional dates that they normally are,” Wilson said. “So it was either try to look at a different carnival or moving our fair dates back a week. Neither one of those is good for us to do, but we felt like we’ve had a good relationship with our carnival and we wanted to keep that carnival.”
When other counties schedule fairs, they’re typically back to back and the carnival works the same way. Wilson said the dates this year are Aug. 28 to Sept. 5.
Wilson assured the 2021 fair will move back to the original dates.
“Unfortunately, this wasn’t a good solution, but with the leap year that was the best solution that we could have. Before we didn’t come up with a carnival short two or three days where we open up and we don’t have a carnival there, or just don’t have a carnival at all. They are hard to get a good quality carnival carnival to come in and partner with them,” Wilson said.
Wilson added the main goal is to have the carnival for all nine days of the fair.
Scheduling has been difficult, but he appreciates the community’s understanding as the board continues the scheduling process.
