Monterey aldermen will consider on Monday a request to improve the lighting around Interstate 40.
Mayor Bill Wiggins said several poles have become dysfunctional.
“What I mean by that is they were hit by motorists and whacked out. They’ve been that way for several years,” Wiggins said. “Then, just two months ago, another motorist coming off the eastbound ramp at exit 300 took out another one. So we have four of those lights out.”
The city must make the repairs after deciding to install the system 15 years ago. Wiggins said the lights provide safety for the traveling public and police department.
“Anytime they (police officers) get a call on I 40 it’s usually between exits 300 and 301, and we want that area well lit,” Wiggins said. “The other reason we need them repairs is because it helps business. If folks on I 40 see a lighted intersection, they’re more likely to get off there.”
Wiggins could not provide a cost estimate for making the repairs. His request on Monday would allow him to seek bids for the project.
