Cookeville will construct a dog park at Cane Creek Park thanks to Boyd Foundation grant funding.
The foundation announced Cookeville and Columbia as its $100,000 grand-prize winners through its Tennessee Dog Park Dash contest.
Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said the city will finalize project details before construction begins.
“We don’t have all the information from Dog Park Dash about their specific requirements so we’ll work through that process,” Woods said. “Then, we’ll do some basic design and layout of the dog park. We have some conceptual ideas at this point, but we’ll do the final design and plan for the dog park and then proceed to build.”
Cookeville officials included plans for a dog park while creating its Cane Creek Park Master Plan about four years ago.
Woods said the city received an overwhelming amount of support from citizens during the community engagement portion of the grant.
“We received comments, we received letters, we received social media posts and tags, and that was instrumental in helping us be selected for the grand prize,” Woods said, “so a huge thank-you to all of the folks in the community who supported the idea of developing a dog park.”
Woods said the dog park will be located north of the lake at Cane Creek Park not far from the recreation center.
30 total communities were selected to receive grant funding through The Boyd Foundation. Fairfield Glade and Smithville were also selected to receive $25,000 grants during the competition.
