The Upper Cumberland Department of Children’s Services will host an informational meeting Saturday to discuss how to become a foster parent or family.
DCS Program Coordinator Jennifer Watts says foster care is a need in the region and hosting the meeting will allow the department to reach out to interested families.
“We’ll have DCS staff as well as some of our contract agencies that also approve foster homes on hand to answer those questions, and present information on what all is involved in becoming an approved foster home,” Watts says.
Upper Cumberland DCS reports the region currently faces a shortage of foster families, with 735 children placed in 240 homes while many others await placement.
“I think the basic requirement that we ask of all families is to have an open heart and an open home, just a willingness to serve kids,” Watts says. “Help kids who are dependent or neglected. Help the department achieve permanency for them whether its through reunifying with their family if they can address the problem that brought their child into care, or it could be through adoption.”

The Upper Cumberland DCS meeting will take place at the regional office in Cookeville, located at 600 Hearthwood Court off Highway 111. The meeting begins at 9 a.m.
