Baxter Prepares for Further Surveying after County Survey

The City of Baxter started preparing for a new corridor study this week in light of the Putnam County transportation survey results.

Baxter Mayor John Martin said Baxter needs various updates to the roads, including signals on Highway 56 and 70 crossroads.

“We also talked about widening the road under the bridge. We don’t know what we can do there,” Martin said. “But we had a meeting this week with all the mayors and Randy Porter and TDOT. And we talked about different priorities of what cities and what counties need. ”

The recent TDOT survey results ranked improvements on Old Gainesboro Highway and Nashville Highway in the top ten most needed projects.

Martin said the city has many needs to address through the corridor study.

“So that’s just a big need also but that’s what the corridor study is going to be and when it takes place, it’s really the thing that Baxter needs,” Martin said. “They were very receptive to it so we are just waiting for them to get everything that we talked about compiled and set our meetings up.”

The corridor study involves a $125,000 grant which the city must match at 10 percent.
