The Cookeville City Council approved an emergency purchase for a new heating and air unit for the police department Thursday night.
The current unit stopped working Monday, making for a hot week inside the police department.
Cookeville Police Chief Randy Evins said the maintenance team worked tirelessly to service the unit to no avail. Carwile Mechanical recommended purchasing a new unit for the building, Evins said.
“Carwile brought in a temporary unit. As you know, that building has zero ventilation because there is no windows,” Evins said. “We’ve got some fans and smaller units in some areas. I guess in a word, we are surviving.”
The unit that stopped working was first installed in 1979. The new unit will cost $14,400.
