Algood Vice Mayor Kirk Dyer says he will still be appearing in chancery court next week to ask a judge to allow city business to move forward after Mayor Scott Bilbrey resigned from office last week.
“The process we started in chancery court wasn’t mainly just to get Mr, Bilbrey to attend meetings,” Dyer said. “It was more so to allow a temporary stay to allow Councilwoman Norris and myself to conduct city business and or name another perosn to one of the open seats.
Dyer said Bilbrey’s resignation was a shock even though he was aware of the mayor’s ongoing medical issues.
Bilbrey’s resignation leaves the city council with only 2 two members. The city charter states that three members must be present in order for a meeting to take place. Bilbrey had missed two consecutive city council meetings for health reasons.
City Administrator Keith Morrison said he’s currently working with his legal team to determine how the city can move forward from Bilbrey’s resignation.
“I can assure the citizens that we are working hard to make sure that they are covered in every way on the surfaces,” Morrison said.
The city’s next monthly meeting is scheduled for November 14th.
