Sparta Board Approves 3,000 Square Foot YMCA Addition

Sparta Aldermen cleared the way for a 3,000-square-foot expansion of the Sparta-White County YMCA Thursday, approving the grant-funded project.

The board after delaying a decision over ownership concerns. City Attorney Caroline Sapp considered what would happen to the improvements if the city’s arrangement with the YMCA changed in the future.

“So essentially the lease does address any alterations or improvements but it does say in paragraph 19 that the city needs to approve that in writing,” Sapp said, “Which is essentially what that does and it reiterates that any addition stays with the building.”

The expansion will add office space, a community room, a kitchen, bathrooms and areas for educational classes.

The YMCA secured grant funding for the project, allowing the organization to expand its facilities without relying on city funding for construction.

Mayor Jerry Lowery said the addition will become part of the existing city-owned building on Moore Street. Aldermen approved the amended agreement Thursday without further discussion or opposition.
