Winning Mindset Drives Three-Sport Star Reece Collins

For Reece Collins, competition does not stop when one season ends. The Livingston Academy standout carries the same relentless drive into soccer, basketball and softball, using every opportunity to compete as another chance to help her teammates find a way to win.

Collins is utilizing a relentless competitive drive to power her performance across three different varsity sports seasons.

Reece Collins said her motivation to participate in soccer, basketball, and softball stems from a deep-seated desire to succeed alongside her teammates. Collins said the constant activity of a three-sport schedule allows her to build multiple friendships while staying busy throughout the entire school year.

“I like to win and so the more you play the more you win and the more friendships you make and it’s just fun to always be busy and doing something,” Collins said.

Collins said her personality on the field and the court is defined by a sharp focus on the final score. Collins said the negative feeling of a loss is a significant motivator that follows her regardless of which sport she is currently playing.

“It’s very competitive, I hate to lose, I’d rather win, but losing, I hate it,” Collins said.

Collins said the primary difficulty of being a three-sport star is managing her schedule to ensure she can practice for upcoming seasons while one is already in progress. Collins said she maintains a consistent mental approach across soccer, basketball, and softball because her objective remains the same in every environment.

“Mostly I just think the same way because I’m into it to win because I just don’t want to lose so I kind of have the same mindset going into all of them. I just to try do everything I can to help the team win,” Collins said.

Collins said her competitive nature forces her to increase her effort during games where her team is trailing. Collins said she will do everything in her power to score points or goals to ensure her team regains the lead.

“Because it makes me try harder. When we’re down I’ll do everything I can to score so we’re winning again,” Collins said.

Collins said she handles the disappointment of a difficult loss by increasing her intensity during the following day of practice. Collins said she uses those practice sessions to focus on making specific adjustments and learning how to fix the mistakes that occurred during the game.

“Normally just like the next day of practice, trying a lot harder than I would at the others and just really focus instead of playing around and making adjustments to where we messed up in that game and learning how to fix them,” Collins said.

Collins currently leads the Lady Wildcats soccer team in goals scored this season.
