Community Flu Shots Available At Overton County Schools

The Overton County Health Department hosting a series of flu shot clinics at local schools through October 27 to provide vaccinations for students, staff, and community members.

Overton County Health Department Nursing Supervisor Megan Reeder said the mobile clinics are designed to eliminate the need for families to travel to a traditional medical office.

“We’ll be set up at each school for anybody that’s interested in a flu shot,” Reeder said, “At some schools we’ll be set up in the building, like if they’re having a festival or something like that, but we will be available to come out to the car if anyone needs to be vaccinated in the car.”

Reeder said the clinics are open to everyone regardless of their insurance status or attendance of the school. The department aims to reach the entire community by making the process as simple as possible for those who are insured, uninsured, or underinsured.

Reeder said it takes approximately two weeks for the body to build full immunity after receiving the vaccination. Because flu activity in the United States typically begins in October and peaks between December and February, the department is encouraging residents to get vaccinated early.

“Bringing flu shots directly to Overton County schools makes it easy and convenient for families,” Reeder said. “It helps remove barriers like scheduling appointments, traveling to clinics, so more students and staff can stay healthy this flu season.”

Reeder said the health department will have signs posted at each school to direct people to the specific vaccination area. While the clinics are held at schools, they are not restricted to students, and any community member is welcome to attend the most convenient location for their schedule.

“They can just show up that night and we’ll take care of them,” Reeder said. “So honestly, just whichever clinic is most convenient for their family.”

Reeder said participants should bring a form of identification and their insurance card if they have one. Parents or guardians must be present with children during the vaccination process.

The next clinic is scheduled for Thursday at Allons Elementary School beginning at 3:30pm. Additional clinics being held October 6 at A.H. Roberts Elementary in Livingston from 2:30 to 6:00 PM. Additional events will follow at Wilson Elementary School on October 8, Livingston Academy on October 9, and Livingston Middle School on October 19.

The final clinic of the season will take place at Rickman Elementary School on October 27 from 2:30 to 8:30 PM.
