Five Mayors Headline State Of Local Government Luncheon

The Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce will host the new mayors of Putnam County municipalities this week to talk about the future.

Director of Membership Karlyn Reel said the organization has held this event for the last four years.

“We just really feel like it is important to give our businesses and our business leaders an opportunity to hear directly from those who are leading our community on what’s coming up, what’s most important, where their initiatives are going to be focused for the next four years,” Reel said.

The event features a presentation from Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter followed by updates from the mayors of Algood, Baxter, Cookeville, and Monterey. Reel said each official receives approximately 10 to 12 minutes to use slideshows to review the past year and outline future goals.

“There’s so many ways to get info, and so sometimes we feel like having an opportunity to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth, if you will, is the best way to get the most accurate and up-to-date info to those in our community,” Reel said.

The chamber is currently accepting questions from the public to be used during a moderated Q&A session. Reel said these submissions help provide clarity on topics ranging from infrastructure and taxes to tourism and utility lines.

“I think it’s really important for attendees to pay attention to what are the efforts going on in your neighboring municipality and how does that work into the larger picture of our whole county,” Reel said. “All of these cities and communities and aldermans and councils are working in partnership with our county mayor, our county commission, and it’s super important for everyone to be on the same page.”

Reel said the luncheon highlights how different municipalities must work together for the betterment of the community regardless of where a person lives or works.

“We hope that they get a glimpse into their personalities, into their strengths, into their focuses and initiatives, and they leave with a sense of pride for the folks who have stepped up and are have answered the calling, if you will, to be a public servant,” Reel said.

Registration for the event is available through the chamber website or by calling the office.
