The Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a due diligence soil study Thursday night for the rear area of the industrial park to prepare the site for future growth.
City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the project is funded by a $71,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. Tindle said the city must provide a 10 percent local match of approximately to complete the testing.
“The grant had to be put in the City of Sparta’s name because our industrial development board was inactive for so long, the federal ID number was not registered with the state,” Tindle said. “So the grant is now in the city’s name.”
Tindle said the state required the city to choose from a specific list of approved companies. The board selected S&ME to perform the study from a list of three firms that submitted qualifications.
The Industrial Development Board met earlier Thursday to approve the selection before the matter moved to the city board for final authorization. Tindle said the local matching funds are already available within the Industrial Development Board budget.
“All three of the companies that submitted an RFQ, Montrose Environmental, Civil and Environmental Consultants, and S&ME were the ones on the approved list that the state required us to pick from,” Tindle said.
