Byrdstown Sells Surplus To Fund City Equipment Upgrades

Byrdstown selling several pieces of surplus equipment to generate funds for upgrading the city’s vehicle fleet and maintenance tools.

Byrdstown Mayor Sam Gibson said the items designated for sale include two older pickup trucks and a broom attachment used for tractors. Gibson said the city plans to use the proceeds from these sealed bids to help purchase a heavier duty truck better equipped for snowplow operations.

“To us when it gets to the point that it’s going to cost more to fix than probably what we can exchange it for something different,” Gibson said, “Then yeah we’re going to go ahead and do that and just go ahead and get rid of it take that money toward buying something else.”

Gibson said the city utilizes the GovDeals platform and state bid lists to acquire new equipment at discounted rates.

Gibson said that selling surplus equipment to upgrade regularly allows the city to maintain better equipment, more updated equipment and ultimately purchase it at a lower cost.

Gibson said the necessity for the show plow is due to the current snowplow mounted on a half-ton truck that officials intend to replace with a three-quarter or one-ton model.

“We have two snowplows for the city and one of them is on a half-ton truck which it needs to be we need to exchange that and look for a either a three-quarter or a one-ton truck for it for that attachment to go on because just because of the fact that the other one is old and a little smaller so we need something that is a little better equipped for pushing snow,” Gibson said.
