State Grant Funds Crossville Downtown Wayfinding Project

Crossville launching a new downtown wayfinding project to install directional signage for residents and visitors.

The city will use a $60,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Tourism. City Manager Valerie Hale said the city previously lacked significant signage to help people navigate the district.

“The downtown revitalization is definitely an economic development tool that we hope to provide to the visitors to attract them more downtown, to increase the foot traffic for the local businesses,” Hale said.

Hale said the project will include the construction of signs that point toward major local landmarks and historic sites throughout Crossville.

“We hope to direct visitors and residents to the main attractions in downtown, such as the Palace or the Depot, the historic courthouse,” Hale said. “So the wayfinding signage will direct them to all of those areas, as well as direct them north and south in and out of town.”

The signs will also help travelers move through the city by providing directions for directional routes. Hale said the design will match the existing “Explore Crossville” logo and branding.

“The look will be cohesive with our current branding, with the ‘Explore Crossville’ logo,” Hale said. “And so we’re actually trying to incorporate the Crab Orchard stone into some of the wayfinding signage to carry out the theme that we have here in Crossville with the Crab Orchard stone.”

The use of Crab Orchard stone is intended to maintain a consistent aesthetic theme throughout the city. Hale said construction of the project should begin in the next month.

“We expect installation to begin by the first of October, and we hope to have that completed by spring,” Hale said.
