Fowler Term Ends As Anton Sworn In As Algood Mayor

Tiffany Anton was sworn in as the new Mayor of Algood during a Tuesday city council meeting following the certification of the August 6 municipal election results.

The transition included the swearing-in of new council members Dan Taylor and Brian Payne.

“For the next four years, I promise to listen, I promise to work, I promise to ask questions,” Anton said, “I promise to keep showing up, and above all, I promise to remember that this position is not about me. It’s about serving the people of Algood.”

Anton and the council also approved resolutions honoring outgoing Mayor Lisa Chapman Fowler and council members Bill Bilbrey and Ruby Hawkins for their years of service to the community.

In other business, City Administrator Keith Morrison said the council approved a change to the employee healthcare plan by moving to a pooled benefit plan through the Tennessee Municipal League. Morrison said the shift to the FMIG BlueCross BlueShield silver plan addresses recent issues with pharmaceutical coverage for diabetic supplies while reducing estimated annual costs by approximately $26,000.

“This will give them an additional option and then when we come back for renewal for next July, we’ll work with FMIG to continue to improve this and hone it down and see if we can’t find some other savings as well,” Morrison said. “Typically all the employees have just had to take it or leave it on what we offered.”

Morrison said the new plan allows employees the option to pay for an upgrade to a gold-level plan at their own expense.
