Warren Teenager Facing Prosecution Over Viral AI Trend

A Warren County High School student faces a charge of making threats of mass violence on school property after an investigation into a viral AI-generated image.

The image featured the “Cat in the Hat” character. Officials said the “Cat in the Hat” trend involves AI-generated videos and images depicting the Dr. Seuss character appearing to lurk outside homes, schools, and other locations. Officials said these images can be disturbing and may be perceived as threatening.

The juvenile served with a petition following a joint investigation by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, the McMinnville Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are expected in the case.

Sheriff Jackie Matheny said law enforcement agencies throughout Warren County and across the state will continue working together to investigate threats and take every necessary step to help keep schools safe.

Matheny said he encourages parents and guardians to speak with their children about the seriousness and potential consequences of creating, posting, sharing, or participating in threatening content online.

Officials said the trend has become widespread across Tennessee, the United States, and other countries. Officials said law enforcement agencies will take every threat seriously even if the incidents are part of a hoax.

Matheny said individuals who create, post, or share threatening content may face criminal or juvenile charges and prosecution.

Director of Schools Grant Swallows said he shares concerns regarding the potential consequences of participating in threatening content online. Officials said the investigation into the reported online threat was extensive before the juvenile was served on Tuesday.

Matheny said he wants to reassure students, parents, teachers, and school staff that law enforcement will continue to prioritize school safety.

Officials said additional charges are expected as the investigation remains ongoing.
