Sparta Board of Mayor and Alderman awarded a bid for the removal of asbestos at the former Baker school building during its Thursday meeting.
City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the project focuses specifically on the interior of the East Bronson Street facility to prepare the site for future work. Tindle said the city received six bids for the project and selected Green Sky Environmental as the low bidder for the contract.
“It is paid for by grant,” Tindle said, “And depending on how they remove the asbestos will determine how much of the building is removed, but it will not pay for the complete demolition and the rest of the building.”
Mayor Jerry Lowery said the work is being funded through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Lowery said the ultimate goal for the property is to clear the site entirely once the hazardous materials are handled.
Tindle said the current funding may not cover the total cost of clearing the property. Tindle said the city might need to seek additional financial assistance to finish the job.
The board also authorized Tindle to seek sealed bids for repairs to the metal roof at the electric department. Tindle said the project is necessary because screws are backing out of the old section of the building, leading to water issues.
The city initially sought informal quotes for the roof work, but the estimated costs exceeded the threshold required for a formal sealed bid process.
