Putnam County School Board approved the construction of a new visitor-side press box for Upperman High School to accommodate growing media demands.
Principal Justin Campbell said the school system intends to complete the project before the first football game of the season in August.
“We have turned media away whenever our press box is very small,” Campbell said. “On the top of our press box currently, it’s just a platform, and that’s usually for our coaches to be able to see the field and be able to radio, and then the media we have down below, it’s just not enough.”
The new structure will be attached to the visitor-side bleachers and will house opposing coaches and visiting media members.
“It would be really helpful to put the opposing teams’ coaches on the other side of the field would be a lot easier too for us because there’s no partitions in our current press box either,” Campbell said. “So it’s it would be really helpful.”
The project is being funded entirely by Upperman High School. The approval is contingent upon a final review of the architectural drawings by school system officials.
The school has already secured an architect to stamp the plans and is moving quickly to meet the August 18 deadline for the start of the season. The board voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda as amended with the press box contingency.
