Cookeville moving forward with plans for a new inclusive sports destination following the approval of state funding for a specialized soccer complex.
Mayor Laurin Wheaton said the project represents a significant addition to the local area. Wheaton addressed members of the Warlick family attending the meeting.
“I know this is going to be a wonderful thing for our community, and it’s for a wonderful reason,” Wheaton said. “So appreciate y’all being here.”
Wheaton and the council unanimously approved the resolution, officially authorizing the receipt and distribution of the $500,000 grant.
“I think that I’ve been moved tonight for more than reasons just having the community and the grace, it’s just so encouraging that we’ve decided to be part of the community in so many ways and we just feel like, I just feel very affirmed tonight and I thank y’all for the community and we appreciate all you do as elected officials and we can’t wait to partner with you on many many things for this city,” a Warlick family member said.
Councilman Eric Walker said he was already familiar with the foundation’s message and mission. Walker said the council is committed to supporting the initiative in any way possible.
“Same, I’m familiar with your message from before, and I think what you guys are doing is great, anything we can do to support it,” Walker said.
The Joseph Warlick Memorial Foundation will oversee the construction of the facility, which is designed to be accessible to all youth soccer players regardless of their physical abilities.
The state funding is a direct appropriation, meaning the city serves as the pass-through entity to ensure the grant reaches the foundation for its intended purpose.
