White County officials moving forward with plans to acquire an eight-acre property adjacent to the old quarry site to facilitate the construction of a new solid waste department building.
Commissioner TK Austin said the purchase became necessary after the county was unable to find suitable ground for a septic system on the existing quarry property.
“A $250,000 offer has been made and accepted,” Austin said, “And we are doing an environmental 1, survey on it to make sure that there’s not anything there that’s going to come back to bite us.”
The Solid Waste Committee previously granted executive authorization to begin the Phase 1 study and verify the property’s suitability. The land is located down the road from the current county property, approximately 15 feet from the gate.
The committee also received an update from Waste Management representative Tom Anton regarding Phase 2 permitting for the landfill. Anton said the state issued a notice of deficiency regarding the liner system, which will likely delay the construction payment timeline by one to two months.
“So we’re still kind of anticipating December as far as to be able to provide that payment for construction based on the permit itself. So when I say that, it may be January. So I’m just giving it to you to be very, very transparent,’ Anton said.
In other business, safety concerns regarding heavy truck traffic on Old Kentucky Road were also addressed during the meeting. Anton said the state conducted a traffic assessment and recently began installing new road signage, though the state declined a request for flashing signs.
“Now, we can get further on down the road and I will request another as we kind of move forward,” Anton said. “So we want to stay in front of that because safety is the most important part, period.”
