Crossville officials finalizing a contract for the upgrades to Fire Station 1.
Engineer Tim Begley said the current schedule has the contractor arriving on February 11 to begin foundation work. Begley said the city plans to start demolition work approximately two weeks before that date.
“When they provide us with a shop drawing of the red iron building, that’s when the clock will start,” Begley said, “And their current schedule has that for November.”
Begley said the project is currently in a 60 to 90-day window where the contractor is developing professional designs and specifications. Begley said the city utilized a design-build approach to absorb cost savings, though it requires giving the contractor more time on the front end for engineering.
Begley said the contract was originally awarded in May. Begley said a delay in securing bonds from the bonding company slowed the initial process because he required the company to approve a specific schedule of values to protect the city in case of a default.
“If the bonding company approves the schedule of values, if this contractor defaults later, and we don’t expect that,” Begley said, “But if they do default later, they will have to back up the schedule of values as we have paid them on a few items.”
Begley said the contractor’s current schedule lists a completion date of August 23, 2027. Begley said this timeline is approximately one month ahead of the 300-day deadline established in the contract.
“I think as we move forward and as they present us with drawings, the calendar will be locked down, the schedule will be locked down a lot tighter than what it is at this point in time,” Begley said.
The city will receive monthly updates on the project’s status to monitor progress.
