Putnam Rescuers Help Lift Semi After Highway Chase

Putnam County emergency officials involved in a rescue just over the Smith County line Friday morning following a high-speed police pursuit on Interstate 40 Friday morning.

Smith County Rescue Squad officials said the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado was being pursued by law enforcement when the vehicle struck the rear of a flatbed semi-trailer. The accident trapped the driver under the trailer.

“The rescue required the removal of the vehicle’s roof, the displacement of a lot of metal, as well as the use of a heavy rescue airbag lifting system to raise the semi-trailer off the patient’s lower extremities,” Smith County Rescue Squad officials said.

Smith County Rescue Squad officials said the collision occurred on Interstate 40 near the Buffalo Valley Rest Area just before 5 a.m. on Friday.

Putnam County EMS and the Putnam County Fire Department aided in the response.
