Gary Bates taking over as the new principal of Spencer Elementary School after serving 35 years in the education field.

Bates most recently worked as an instructional coach for Bledsoe County Schools where he supported middle and high school educators for four years. He previously spent 12 years as a principal serving students from Pre-K through sixth grade.

“I am very honored to have been selected to be the new principal of Spencer Elementary,” Bates said. “I’m excited to be returning as a principal to an elementary setting. It is a role I am familiar with and one that I greatly enjoy.”

Bates began his career in 1991 as a fifth-grade teacher and has held various educational roles since that time. Bates lives a few miles from Spencer with his wife and a large household that includes adult children, parents, and several animals.

“I’m looking forward to being part of the Spencer community and serving you,” Bates said. “I’ll see you all in August.”

The statement said Bates intends to become an active part of the community by working alongside students, families, faculty, and staff.
