Sparta Board Approves Water Line Upgrades And Rezoning

The Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen authorized taking bids for a series of water line upgrades across seven city streets Thursday.

City Administrator Tonya Tindle said said early authorization would ensure the water line upgrades can move forward immediately once the state approval arrives. That typically takes about 60 days.

“Now we are still waiting on the final TDEC approval before we can put these out to bid,” Tindle said, “But the engineers wanted us to go ahead and get authorization, so in if it’s in between a cycle for our board meeting, they can go ahead and get that stuff to send out for bid.”

The board also approved the first reading of two rezoning ordinances, including a property at 427 West Brockman Way and a parcel on North Spring Street. Lowry said the West Brockman Way property will move from residential to commercial, while the North Spring Street parcel will transition from industrial to commercial.

The board also awarded a bid to dispose of surplus city equipment and vehicles. Lowry said the city chose Tays over other bidders because the company agreed to move the items off city property and handle necessary preparations, such as removing decals and replacing keys.

The meeting concluded with the swearing-in of Ronald Hall as a new reserve firefighter. Lowry said the reserve program continues to flourish and expressed excitement for the growth of the department.
