Riddle’s Presence, Team Mindset Fuel Clay County Tennis

At Clay County High School, tennis player Martina Riddle has spent four years quietly building consistency, leadership, and energy.

Riddle’s path into the sport started close to home. Her sister played first, and that was all it took. From there, Riddle said she grew into a dependable piece of Clay County’s lineup, developing not just her game, but a deep appreciation for the culture surrounding it.

“Some people bring different types of energy,” Riddle said. “They’re more like really, really uplifting. They kind of give us a hard time, but we know they’re always playing with us and trying to make us better.”

That balance defines Riddle’s experience.

Riddle said her role is clearer through her presence: A four-year player who has contributed to the team’s competitive lineup and postseason opportunities. Riddle said practice is where the foundation is built, through long rallies, constant feedback and teammates pushing each other to improve.

Riddle said her teammates routinely offer advice, even when they are on the other side of the net.

“We’re always cheering for them,” Riddle said. “After the match, we’re telling them how good they did and always trying to improve during practices and games.”

That mindset translates directly into how she approaches competition. Riddle said matches can stretch sometimes up to two hours over the course of her career, demanding both physical endurance and mental sharpness. Riddle said the difference often comes down to awareness and adjustment. Between points and during breaks, she resets then studies.

“I always try to watch in the first match and see their struggles and where I can place it,” Riddle said. “[I want to place it in the spots] they struggle with.”

Her impact at Clay County extends beyond tennis. Riddle is also a member of the Lady Bulldogs volleyball team and serves as a manager for the girls basketball program. But on the tennis court, her identity is a teammate first and a competitor always.
