For Livingston Academy Wildcats baseball infielder Brodey Walker, success at the plate has not come by accident. It has been built through adjustments, repetition, and years of work behind the scenes.
Now in his fourth season with Livingston Academy, Walker said he has taken a more intentional approach in the batter’s box. After studying film and learning from in-game experience, Walker said he has refined his mechanics to better time opposing pitchers.
Walker said his approach now centers on rhythm and anticipation.
Walker said he changed his approach at the plate to where his front leg kicks up and put his hands back when the pitcher kicks his leg up. Walker said those adjustments are made based on the film and in-game experiences he sees.
That attention to detail reflects a deeper understanding of hitting, one that has evolved since he first picked up a bat at just four years old.
Walker said credits his father for laying that foundation early.
“It just helped me get the fundamentals down when I was young,” Walker said. “That way I could have them when I’m older.”
Those fundamentals are now showing up in his approach at the plate. Walker said he focuses on attacking early in counts while staying disciplined when behind.
“[I] jump on the fastball early,” Walker said. “{I] fight off the breaking balls when you get two strikes. I just always try to find the fastball first when I can, look for my pitch, and then go from there.”
While his offensive mindset continues to develop, Walker has also found a home defensively. The senior plays primarily at second base.
Walker said his path there was not always set. During his earlier playing days, he moved around the field, seeing time at third base and in the outfield before settling into his current role.
“It was a new experience,” Walker said. “But I got [playing second base] done.”
That willingness to adapt has been a defining trait throughout his career. Combined with his experience as a multi-year varsity player, it has helped Walker carve out a steady role for the Wildcats.
For Walker, it all comes back to a simple mindset: Trust the work, trust the approach, and be ready when the right pitch comes.
