A new TVA grant will provide free carbon monoxide detectors to Sparta residents.
The Sparta Mayor and Aldermen Board authorized a $7,000 match for the Community Care Grant. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can be lethal when undetected in a home. Mayor Jerry Lowery said over the last three years, the city has passed out weather radios and fire suppression blankets to help residents.
“And now this is just added to what the fire chief and the fire department’s already doing,” Lowery said. “That is making a difference in the City of Sparta, and that’s making a difference in people’s lives. And this may. If it saves one life, it’s money well spent.”
City Administrator Tonya Tindle said city would go through the YMCA to purchase the detectors. Lowery said it was a gesture of goodwill for TVA to partner with the city to provide this service.
