Gainesboro Children Read Poetry To Painting Ponies

Children in Gainesboro will have the unique opportunity to read their own original poetry to ponies that will then paint them a picture in return during an upcoming community event on April 10.

Roaring River Cultural Alliance President and Co-founder Valerie Goetz said the organization partnered with the public library and Jordan Creek Farms to create the interactive gathering. The concept was adapted from a previous humane society fundraiser where dogs created artwork on canvas.

“It gives the children a chance to feel confident about having written something and we adults will be working with the children to write either probably a haiku or a limerick, something nice and short,” Goetz said. “And then having it printed on paper they can take it and read it to the pony so that that helps them build confidence.”

Goetz said the free event will run from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday and does not require advance registration. The library will give away free books while a bake sale will raise proceeds for the high school art department.

“We believe that art needs to be accessible to everybody and that you know art comes in a lot of different forms and why not make art fun?” Goetz said.

Goetz said the painting process involves placing a treat over the canvas and paint. The pony will move the paint around to create the artwork while eating the treat.

“It was extremely important,” Goetz said. “We are trying to all work together as far as non-profit organizations to build community here in the town.”

Goetz said the idea originated during a lunch discussion with Victoria from Jordan Creek Farms about ways to collaborate. She hopes the poetry painting becomes an annual recurring event for the town.

“Well I hope that the community turns out and the kids go home with not only an opportunity to meet a pony and be friends with a pony but to know that they can write poetry,” Goetz said. “And that they can express themselves in words in a different way.”

Goetz said the alliance is also hosting a foraging and herb walk around the Gainesboro square on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to noon, which requires advance registration.
