As the soccer season begins in Gainesboro, Jackson County High School boys soccer head coach Kenneth Davis said he is not just focused on wins and losses. Davis said it is about representation, growth and identity.
Davis said the Blue Devils have shown steady improvement throughout the offseason, something Davis attributes not only to his players buying in, but to changes within the program itself.
“I want them to represent our school and our community like they’ve done all year,” Davis said. “I just want them to keep playing their style and never change from the style that they, they understand how to do.”
That identity has been central to Jackson County’s development this season. The Blue Devils finished undefeated in regular season district play last season before falling to Monterey in the first round of the district tournament 2-1. Even in tough matches, Davis said he has emphasized composure, effort and staying true to the team’s system.
“We’ve got people that come in to watch our soccer games,” Davis said. “I tell my boys to go out and, they represent our school, they represent our community in the best way they can.”
Community pride has become a defining theme. Davis said support from the stands matters, and he wants his players to understand the responsibility that comes with wearing the Blue Devils crest. Davis said another key factor in the team’s progression has been growth within the coaching staff.
“One thing I’ve done a lot this year is we’ve, I’ve added a new assistant coach,” Davis said. “We’ve improved as the year has went on.”
Davis said the additional voice on the sideline has helped bring fresh perspective and reinforced the program’s emphasis on communication. As the season has progressed, that improvement has shown in the team’s cohesion and confidence.
Now, with the opening matches ahead, Davis said his message remains simple: Compete relentlessly, communicate constantly and stay true to the style that defines Jackson County soccer.
