Sparta Board Approves Budget Amendment Tied to Purchase

Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously approved a budget amendment Thursday night tied to the city’s recent purchase of the Christpoint Church facility.

The church is moving and sold the space to the city to be used for a conference center. Sparta Finance Director Tonya Tindle said the city is making plans for the facility.

“This is just to amend our budget to December the 31st, specifically because of the purchase of the building,” Tindle said. “It’s just required by the Comptroller.”

Tindle said said the amendment updates the fiscal year 2025–26 operating budget to properly account for the transaction and meet state oversight requirements.

The board held a public hearing before moving it into second and final reading. No members of the public spoke during the hearing.

In other business, the board approved a resolution abandoning several unused rights of way and reverting ownership to adjoining property owners. City officials described the move as a cleanup effort involving old easements and unused property segments.

“These are old utility easements and other things that we don’t use anymore,” Tindle said. “We’re just trying to clean up our tax map and get these things back to where they can be put to better use.”

The board approved the low bid for electric pole replacements, authorized staff to solicit sealed bids for paving, approved December financial reports, and approved a promotion within the street department.
