New Second Harvest UC Food Distribution Going Smoothly

Second Harvest says food distributions in the Upper Cumberland have gone smoothly since taking over the food distribution services a month ago.

Second Harvest Marketing and Communications Manager Marvin Figgins said Second Harvest has had 31 tractor-trailers from the USDA this past month, which has been huge in serving the Upper Cumberland Region. Figgins said Second Harvest has not had any challenges distributing food since taking over.

“It’s pretty much something you never see when starting something new, so it’s been really encouraging, and it’s been great to be able to accommodate our neighbors with USDA-backed food,” Figgins said.

Figgins credited preparation for the smooth start despite the government shutdown. Figgins said the need for food has increased in the Upper Cumberland even after the government shutdown ended.

“We still have an increased need in all of our areas, especially, you know, out in Cumberland and those bordering counties across the western side of our service area,” Figgins said. “You know, it falls over into Fentress and Morgan County, and Scott County, and Roane County. All of those areas around Cumberland, as well. The need has simply just gone up.”

Figgins said the food distribution is still the same as it was before Second Harvest took over. Figgins said there are no changes planned for the food distribution process.

“As far as changes and adjustments go, I guess just more so learning, you know, our routes and what areas may need more of what,” Figgins said. “But as far as changes and adjustments, we have been pretty much sticking to our normal schedule.”

Figgins said Second Harvest is still working to help those in the region who face food insecurity. Figgins said Second Harvest is still looking for volunteers and donations to help support the region.
