Freshman Addison Slaven is starting her high school dance journey with the Livingston Academy Lady Wildcats this school year, and she is already making a mark.
Slaven, who danced for the Wildcats in middle school, also honed her skills through studio dance, giving her a strong foundation before stepping onto the high school stage.
“It was more the dance teacher from the studio,” Slaven said. “She started teaching the high school team and I wanted to dance with her, and then when high school came, I decided to join the dance team.”
Slaven said that studio dance differs from performing with the Lady Wildcats mainly in the repetition. While studio routines are performed once, her high school dances are practiced and performed throughout the football and basketball seasons. Slaven said performing for the Lady Wildcats is a lot more energetic and fun.
Making the team required a tryout over the summer, but Slaven said she quickly found a welcoming environment among her older teammates.
“They let you join very easily and they’re very sweet.” Slaven said. “All of the dancers are very supportive even if you’re just jumping in and learning new dances.”
Slaven said she needed a few practices to fully grasp the team’s routines. Now, a few months in, Slaven said her performances have improved dramatically.
“I’ve gotten a lot better especially with the technique,” Slaven said. “[I’ve learned a lot of] different styles and different moves.”
Looking ahead, Slaven hopes to continue growing as a dancer, learning new skills and refining her routines over the coming years.
