Upper Cumberland children will get the chance to purchase gifts for family members this weekend as part of an local group’s annual regifting effort.
Patch Work Upper Cumberland Member Kim Walker said the organization is hosting the 11th annual event at Hampton’s Crossroad Baptist Church. Ages four to 12 can participate. Walker said the event allows children the opportunity to give a gift to their parents and caregivers, while also giving back into the community.
“And it’s amazing just to see the kids excited about it,” Walker said. “And again, it’s not based on your income, we’re just trying to love on the children. We’re trying to share God’s love with them, and teach them that they can share there love as well with others.”
Walker said the children are allowed to pick two gifts, one for each parent. Walker said some children choose to shop for a parent and a grandparent.
“They come in and they immediately see something that they’re like yeah that’s it. And they’re ready to take their gift and go get them wrapped.” Walker said. “Some kids walk around the table two, three, four times. It takes them a long time to just, find that perfect gift.”
Walker said the event will have each child put together bags for the community and decorate a quilt square. Later that evening, a quilt will be assembled for a nominated individual in the community struggling with a health challenge. The church has previously given Blessing Bags to patients, inmates and seniors. This year, Walker said the church will give Blessing Bags to reserved members in the community.
“They not only are getting to bless their caregivers or their parents,” Walker said. “But they are getting to bless people that they don’t even know.”
Walker said the event originated from years of conversation with friends, debating on the best ways they could help people through the church. Walker said she is thankful with the way the event has come together, giving children the opportunity to give a gift to their parents.
