The city of Sparta has received approval from T-DOT to scale down its multimodal sidewalk project, after bids came in significantly higher than anticipated.
Bids for the project came in at an estimated $2.8 million back in August. City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the city received an estimated $1 million grant from T-DOT for the project and would be responsible for the excess cost.
The original project was going to construct a five-foot-wide and four-inch-thick sidewalk between intersections on Bockman Way and Turntable Lane. Tindle said the project will now install a sidewalk from Bockman Way to Polk Street. Tindle said the city hopes to stay within the $1 million range so that the grant will cover the project.
Tindle said the city hopes to rebid the project in the Spring of 2026.
