Clay Updates Student Dress Rules After Association Audit

The Clay County School Board approved revising its Student Code of Conduct Thursday night, cracking down on school dress.

Board Chairman Benji Bailey said the new guidelines specify clothing cannot expose body parts in an indecent manner as to disrupt the learning environment. Bailey said the Tennessee School Board Association recommended the dress code change as part of its annual audit.

“It’s an annual audit that they go through our policies, all our policies, that’s a service that they provide through the Tennessee Schools Board Association,” Bailey said. “Several school boards participate with this, and it helps from a consistency standpoint, I’m sure, across the state.”

Bailey said the annual Tennessee Schools Board Association audit assists the board in keeping on track with their goals. It also, Bailey said, helps the board remain consistent throughout the year in its vision.

“We’re grateful for that service, as well,” Bailey said. “So it’s a suggestion from them.”
