Jackson Looking To Repair County Jail Roof Damage

Jackson County Commissioners looking for money to repair the damaged roof on top of the county jail.

County Mayor Jim Morgan said after discovering several leaks, the county’s insurance company determined the damage was caused by hail. Morgan said though the insurance company helped evaluate the damage, the county will have to pay the entire cost of the repair.

“The insurance company and our policy, because of the particular type of damage that we have, it’s gonna be what our deductible for the jail is,” Morgan said.

Morgan said the project will have to be bid out as the repairs will cost a rough estimate of $44,000. Morgan said the commission may even decide to do a replacement over repairs, but either way, the county will have to find the money.

“With the shingle, it may be time, and we will have that discussion; it may be time to replace the shingle-type roofing, and then maybe repairing the flat roof,” Morgan said. “Until we have a better idea of the cost and our option, it will be a little bit more difficult to determine right now what that may be.”

Morgan said the deductible for the jail is one percent of what the county has it insured for. Morgan said the county having to pay out of pocket to repair the roof is disappointing.

“You can’t control the weather, and like I said, we just were not sure of what the damage was or if it was even storm damage, with where they noticed the leaks to start with,” Morgan said. “Right now that’s kind of where we are at in the process.”

Morgan said patches have been made to the damaged portions of the roof. Morgan said the commission could consider bids either in December or January.
