As the delay on SNAP benefits continues, the DeKalb Senior Center one of several centers across the region providing hyper-nutritious meals for seniors.
Director Pamela Redmon said those 60 years or older can register with the center to receive three hot meals a week through the UCDD Congregate Nutrition program. Redmon said the center has provided the program for two years, but the impacts of the government shutdown have created a greater need for the program.
“But right now its important because the SNAP benefits have been deleted,” Redmon said. “And people need good nourishing food to keep their health up and their activities.”
Redmon said a dietitian recommends the meals the center provides. Redmon said they deliver a third of the daily vitamin requirements seniors need per serving. Redmon said many seniors opt for quick meals lacking nutritional value, as mobility and dietary restrictions can affect their overall health and wellness.
“(The meals are) a lifeline for the elderly adults particularly that might have trouble procuring food and difficulty preparing it and so, you know, we think its a delicious, hopefully, well-balanced hot meal that meets their dietary restrictions.”
Redmon said the program combats loneliness and promotes healthy digestion in seniors, providing a social setting for them to receive proper nutrition. Redmon said the program supports senior mental and physical health for those who register with the center.
