Prescott South Middle School will be making improvements to its back playground by installing artificial turf.
Prescott South Middle School Principal Tera Brooks said the turf will cover a 30′ x 100′ area where students tend to play. Brooks said the area does not hold grass very well, and previous attempts to fix the area have not worked. Brooks said the artificial turf will improve the playing surface for students.
“We just feel like it’s the best use of that, to do that, to use that space is to create that artificial turf so that students can play on it all the time,” Brooks said. “No matter if it’s rained or not, because when it rains, it does muddy it up, and it just doesn’t have a good playing surface.”
Brooks said part of the installation is that the area will be evened out. The artificial turf will cost an estimated $20,000 and will be covered entirely by PTO funds.
“They jumped on it quickly, and so without them, we wouldn’t have had with our general funds, I would not have been able to purchase that without them coming in,” Brooks said.
Brooks said the portion of the playground will be blocked off while the turf is being installed.
“Throughout the day, we have different grade levels that go out at different times,” Brooks said. “So, probably on the day that they are here, because it is probably gonna take a day, a day and a half is what they were kind of thinking, maybe a little longer, it just depends. We will probably have to move students who are playing back there to either a different area of the school, to the front, or to the side.”
Brooks said the goal was to have the turf installed over fall break, but the type of turf that was purchased had to be put on backorder.
Brooks said she expects the turf to be installed sometime within the next few weeks.
